Google Notebook is a web research tool that allows users to clip text, search results, and images from web pages and place them in notebooks for later use.
Notebook entries can be defined as public or private. So, here's the rub.
I was perusing the various search engines looking at SERP's for various keywords and noticed that on page 3 on Live search that the 30th position for Internet marketing was a public Google notebook entry.

I was curious since Internet marketing is a pretty competitive niche so I explored the entry a little further. What I found was a page with Internet marketing in the title, the page was populated with Internet marketing 14 times and contained 7 links to other Google Notebook pages including Internet marketing within the anchor text.
The most prominent link on the page is a redirect to this page with a plethora of marketing, online casino, viagra, and other ads.
I found it interesting that this page ranked on Live search so I thought I would look at Yahoo. The page was nowhere in sight but I did find one of the other interlinked Google notebook pages in position 296. Juice but no real ranking power.
This page also has some backlinks reported in Site Explorer for a little extra ranking boost too.
As you might expect, these pages are nowhere to be found in Google's SERP.
I would think that links in Google notebooks might be a reasonable thing to do for a little juice and deep links for interior site pages, but interlinking them in this fashion along with nonsense content screams spam. I also found the bold text to be quite humorous.

Spam is still a huge problem on line
This sort of thing is everywhere. I didn;'t know that kind of page would carry any weight with the engines though. I wade through dozens of spam emails every day now and I think its mostly submiting to directories.

Will do whatever works. The search engines dont do that great a job finding this so it will continue.
Google Notebook for spamming
I also noticed a google notebook page stuffed with links to p0rno sites appearing on the first page of live.com while I was searching for the keyword 'filipina webcams'. However, that page is nowhere to be found on Google for the same keyword phrase. So I think such pages get a ranking boost in Live.com but Google discounts such pages.
I have seen this all over msn.com as well...
It seems like msn.com's search is overflowing with these pages.
They actually rank pretty high, for very competitive terms... too bad NO ONE searches with msn... I guess someone probably figured that out AFTER they wasted all their time building these spam pages.
Does it work for non-spam?
That's interesting. Have you noticed if more "legit" (ie. non-spammy) notebook entries rank well in Google's SERPs? Are they ignoring Notebook entries in general, or just the spammy ones?
Cheers, Jon
Does Google Notebook Work?
Hi Jon,
We have found that the notebook entries are ignored by Google, useful for a backlink with Yahoo (like a forum sig I think), and will actually rank with MSN/Live.
