Google Notebook is a web research tool that allows users to clip text, search results, and images from web pages and place them in notebooks for later use.
Notebook entries can be defined as public or private. So, here's the rub.
I was perusing the various search engines looking at SERP's for various keywords and noticed that on page 3 on Live search that the 30th position for Internet marketing was a public Google notebook entry.

I was curious since Internet marketing is a pretty competitive niche so I explored the entry a little further. What I found was a page with Internet marketing in the title, the page was populated with Internet marketing 14 times and contained 7 links to other Google Notebook pages including Internet marketing within the anchor text.
The most prominent link on the page is a redirect to this page with a plethora of marketing, online casino, viagra, and other ads.
I found it interesting that this page ranked on Live search so I thought I would look at Yahoo. The page was nowhere in sight but I did find one of the other interlinked Google notebook pages in position 296. Juice but no real ranking power.
This page also has some backlinks reported in Site Explorer for a little extra ranking boost too.
As you might expect, these pages are nowhere to be found in Google's SERP.
I would think that links in Google notebooks might be a reasonable thing to do for a little juice and deep links for interior site pages, but interlinking them in this fashion along with nonsense content screams spam. I also found the bold text to be quite humorous.

Spam is still a huge problem on line
This sort of thing is everywhere. I didn;'t know that kind of page would carry any weight with the engines though. I wade through dozens of spam emails every day now and I think its mostly submiting to directories.
