A recent survey by Burst Media found that 66% of those surveyed use the Internet for "wellness" information. Wellness encompasses fitness, diet, health, and beauty.

In line with other purchasing decisions, 71% of women research wellness compared to 60% of men, but usage by men over 45 years old closely rivals women.

Baby boomers will continue to use the Internet in substantial numbers and many find the website design employed by sites as a critical factor in measuring useful and usable sites from those that are quickly abandoned.

Older users prefer large print and high contrast between background and foreground, in conjunction with informative headlines, bullet points, and the general copywriting rules that all webmasters should follow for any target audience.

The wellness niche is an excellent content web site topic. This survey indicated that 47% of those surveyed reported household incomes in excess of $100,000. In addition to the niche leaders like wellness.com and webmd.com many blogs and forums are popular destinations in the niche.

Wellness by popularity was reported as:

Topic Women % Men %
Nutrition 40.3 36.0
Diet 37.2 24.2
Nutrition 30.9 29.6
Beauty 32.4 13.0
Stress 19.2 19.1
Smoking 7.5 9.1

These are competitive niche topics. It will take time, networking, talent, and links galore to compete in the top level subjects. Something like yoga for stress relief would be less competitive so if you plan to compete in these baby boomer niche topics try long tail keyphrases for traffic. Trying to rank for diet or something like that would be tough.

Rich media is an important part of success in today's marketplace so video, polls, and forums help to ensure repeat visitors in the niche.
